Catching grease · Wolf ventilation

A baffle filter is a stainless panel of interlocking channels rather than a mat of wire. Air has to turn sharply to get through it, grease droplets cannot turn that tightly, and they strike the metal and run down to the bottom edge. Nothing is held in a layer that can seal over, which is why baffles are the usual choice under a professional canopy and why they wash and go straight back in.

Wire brush, slip-joint pliers and four screwdrivers laid on a towel with a small mounting bracket, two clips, screws, a nut and a spacer
A wire brush on a bench towel. That brush is most of the tool list for a set of filters: they come down, they get washed, they go back, and the work happens at the sink rather than with a meter.

What a baffle does that a mesh does not

Mesh holds grease in the wire. That works until the wire fills, and then it is a lid over the hood. A baffle catches by inertia instead: the air turns, the grease cannot, and what is caught drains out of the airway rather than sitting in it. A set that is overdue a wash still passes air.

Worth checking which of the two is under your own canopy before ordering anything: hoods of the same age and the same make do not all carry the same filter, and a mesh panel is washed and judged on different terms.

Loaded, and how you can tell

Hold one up to a window. Daylight should come through the gaps along the whole length, not only at the ends. Then take its weight — a set that has been through a lot of frying is heavy in the hand, and the edges feel tacky rather than dry. Both signs arrive well before the hood sounds any different.

Refitted the right way round

Baffles are not symmetrical. Put one back reversed and it sits proud of the others, whistles at speed, and drains the wrong way across the canopy. Note which edge faced the room before pulling them, keep the set in order, and seat each one until its catch takes hold. Order gets sorted on the visit if nobody noticed at the time.

What putting it right costs

This one has no published band. Wolf Repair Los Angeles puts a figure on it after the diagnosis, as one number covering the part and the labour, and nothing is ordered until you have agreed it — (310) 626-4008.

A flat $89 buys the call-out and a full diagnosis, and that $89 is deducted from the repair once you have approved it.

Follow-ups

How often should baffle filters be cleaned?

There is no interval that fits every kitchen. Wok work and frying load a set in weeks; a household that mostly boils and bakes goes far longer. Judge it by the light coming through the baffles and by the weight in your hand, and wash them once either one has changed.

Can a loaded filter damage the blower motor?

It makes the motor work against a wall of grease, and a motor doing that runs hotter than it was built to. Some cut out partway through cooking and start again once they cool. Wolf Repair Los Angeles measures airflow at the filters before blaming a motor — (310) 626-4008.
